On February 2nd 2018 the “Integrated Laboratory 1A” design studio year 2017-2018 at IUAV University of Venice has come to an end with the final exam!
The Workshop “Bridging Port and City” addresses the theme of city transformation for significant and strategic fragments with a project at an intermediate scale between the urban scale and the architectural one. We use the notion of “new urban ensemble” to define a complex of buildings that interact in their composition so as to create new urban spaces of quality for the life of man, both collective and individual. The project locates its boundaries between the city and the harbor, overlooking two opposing quays, the limitations between the historic area and the port area now partially devoted to logistics and partially unused along the the Scomenzera canal, which connects the west terminal of the Canal Grande (Piazzale Roma/Stazione) to the Giudecca Canal.
The design proposals are incorporated in and relevant to the whole western area of the city including the gasometers in the Ex Italgas area, the restored warehouses area, those areas currently used as parking and the docks which today are delimited by customs up to San Basilio. All the proposals aim to value this important opportunity for retraining the west face of the city as its urban neighborhood as an urban space devoted to housing, work, education, sport and leisure, the direct continuation of the Zattere and at the same time a bridge between the port area and the city.
